General Questions

Actually, yes. Philosophically, it aligns with how we do business. It’s not about hours, it’s about getting sh*t done and providing value to clients. If you can get everything done that is on your plate in half the time it takes the next person…you shouldn’t be working as many hours as them. If you’re client-facing, we trust that you’ll set expectations appropriately with clients and follow through on your promises. If we didn’t have trust in this, we wouldn’t have hired you.

We avoid billing clients by the hour wherever possible. Time spent is not of value to a client. It is only a metric of cost for us as a firm. Thus, the only time we are billing by the hour is when we cannot reasonably estimate our time spend on a specific non-recurring project. However, if you’re in a position where you’re supporting one of our Dark Horse Principals, you’ll need to keep track of your time so that we can invoice them appropriately. We have software that makes this easy to do, but we try to do as little timekeeping as possible and focus more on providing value.

We offer a 401(k) with matching, we pay 100% of your health insurance premiums up to $500/mo, we have an unlimited PTO plan, and we pay for your continuing professional education.

Kinda. The mantra we live by in this regard is: dress for the occasion. If you’re client-facing, just be smart about who you are interfacing with. If it’s a new client, dress like you would if you were going to a nice restaurant. We’re not trying to knock anyone’s socks off but we do need to be taken seriously. Also, wearing Dark Horse gear is always encouraged as long as it’s situationally appropriate. Basically, don’t be a rube…use the executive part of your brain!

The CARE Bear is a prestigious honor bestowed upon team members who exemplify one of our core values (which creates the mnemonic of CARES). Such honor entitles the recipient to the envy of their peers and 1,000,000 Schrute Bucks.

You’ve heard of our Teams channel, eh? Some of us used to vent via Facebook status posts until we realized how juvenile that was and how many arguments it unnecessarily fueled. That being said, there is nothing more therapeutic than feeling validated about a well-articulated complaint. This is a safe space for said dissention.

Principal Questions

It’s sort of like being Ferris Bueller. While all of your peers are trapped in the soul-sucking drudgery that is your typical accounting firm, you’re off on an adventure in the big city (or wherever your heart desires) charting your own path. Like Ferris, you’ll have friends by your side along the journey. We can’t promise that it will be easy, but we can promise it will be fun (and much more lucrative). Do we have your attention? Bueller….Bueller?

There are 2 paths to becoming a Principal. One is through acceptance to and graduation from our Principal Accelerator Program. The other is for those who bring a qualifying pre-existing book of business with them to Dark Horse.

This is a unique opportunity for CPAs who want an accelerated path to growing a book of business from scratch under the Dark Horse brand. We will work closely with you to make sure you are setup for success. You’ll get a comfortable salary while you’re building your book of business. There’s no other way to grow an accounting practice from scratch without having to deplete your savings. Needless to say, we’re rather particular about who gets to become the next Accelerator.
You will be responsible for tending all of the inquiries that come in (phone calls, website inquiries, Yelp inquiries, relationship referrals, etc.). It’s sort of like drinking from a fire hose, but there is no quicker way to grow your book. Once you become a Principal, you’ll focus on building your local presence and desired verticals (and you won’t be responsible for fielding the leads). Do you know how you’re going to scale yourself? Do you know how you’re going to be able to stay in front of technology to remain relevant? Do you have an exit/succession plan? Do you have resources beyond your own finite knowledge to serve clients and sign prospects? Do you want to work alone forever? These are just a few of the questions that we can solve for you when you become a Dark Horse Principal. Watch this video for more insight and reach out to us so we can answer all of your questions.

Yes, once you’ve been with the company for roughly 5 years, you’ll be able to sell your book of business back to Dark Horse at a 1.25X multiple of annual recurring revenue.

That they do. Principals receive a stock option grant upon admittance and additional option grants each calendar year based on the profitability of their book of business

Indeed, there are. We encourage our Principals to establish relationships with each other so that they can refer business to each other when a prospective client isn’t quite in their wheelhouse. If you source the referral and they sign with the Principal that you referred them to, you’ll receive 2% of the ongoing gross revenue from that client so long as both of you remain at the firm.
