Mary Pierce joined Dark Horse after following a different path than many CPAs.
Mary grew up in the Detroit area and worked in her family’s auto parts business. There she learned the value of hard work and the importance of small businesses within the community and the economy at large. At age 14, she was doing the bookkeeping for her dad, among other odd jobs. The bookkeeping work sparked an interest in accounting, ultimately leading to her graduating Magna Cum Laude at the University of Detroit with a degree in accounting. She went to work for a large, regional CPA firm, where she earned her CPA license. She is currently licensed in both Michigan and Florida.
While working at this firm, she discovered a love of real estate and construction, working on various clients in these spaces. This resulted in her moving out of public accounting to serve as Controller, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Tax Officer for top local real estate developers/builders in both Michigan and Florida. Desiring to leverage and translate her knowledge and experience to many companies instead of just one, Mary returned to public accounting to be a strategic business advisor for her clients. Mary is a member of the Gold Coast Builders Association and the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Remembering her family’s struggle to make a small business profitable, Mary found the Profit First community and is a Mastery level Profit First Professional. She has deployed the Profit First system to solve the WHY of the work she does: eradicating entrepreneurial poverty for every client. She is passionate about helping small business owners look at their business as something that supports their life rather than a weight around their neck. As an American Institute of Certified Tax Coaches member, she employs strategic tax planning to help clients keep more of what they earn.
When not helping eradicate entrepreneurial poverty, Mary enjoys playing the piano – but only for herself! She is a voracious reader and enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, traveling, and walking Pippin, the rescue dog. She proudly supports the Detroit Red Wings hockey team, even though it’s been a long time since they’ve won the Stanley Cup. She loves to bake and share her creations with lucky friends and family.
