Human progress has always been driven by a sense of adventure and unconventional thinking
— Andre Geim
Most life journeys are not linear. A mapping of the many places KC travels to would illustrate this point. For her, it's all about the experiences gained and the memories made in her travels. The same could be said for her career. Most experiences were not as expected, and some served as a learning moment for what to avoid in the future. One such experience was working at a Big 4 audit firm, where the combination of unsustainable hours and a borderline toxic culture informed her decision to find a smaller, more relationship-centric firm.
Relocation to Seattle meant a new job at a new firm. She found a firm there that had many of the qualities she loved at her previous firm and provided her with the opportunity to switch from their Audit practice to their growing Client Accounting Services practice. KC was instrumental in the CAS practice tripling in size during her 5+ year tenure in the role. In this role, she wore many hats, from designing the systems and processes and supporting the department's technology to transitioning clients to the cloud and automating their accounting functions. Over time, she grew into a leadership role within the department and the firm.
So, why would she leave the position she crafted for herself and loved to join Dark Horse? It all came down to impact. Specifically, she could have an impact by guiding accountants in their CAS practices to be more efficient, more effective, and more profitable while providing game-changing insights and strategic direction to clients. It's not that she couldn't have done this elsewhere, but she saw in Dark Horse a bigger vision that aimed to impact the firm and the industry as a whole positively.
Outside of the many hats worn at work, she wears just as many in her personal life. She loves being active, especially in the outdoors, playing competitive beach volleyball, recreational soccer and futsal, hiking, biking, backpacking, and traveling the world. After all, you can't obtain the experiences she's after in this life by playing it safe on the sidelines or warming the bench.
